If you're wondering what DE hair straighteners are, you've come to the right place. In this blog, I'll explain clearly what they are, who they're for, and how to use and maintain them!
1. What are DE fiber inserts?
DE stands for double ended , or “two ends.” In simple terms, one braid section contains two “ends” that form a fiber folded in the middle. When a DE braid is installed on a head, it is attached at its center, leaving both ends hanging freely, creating a bushy, showy result with a single attachment point.
This is different from SE (single ended) braids, where the attachment is at one end and the braid only hangs from one side. DE braids offer more volume with fewer sections.
DE braids can be dreadlocks, boho-style loose strands, curly strands, or intricately braided microbraids. Braids can be pre-made or you can braid them yourself from the fiber hair.
2. Who are DE braids suitable for – and when are they used?
DE braids are suitable for almost anyone who wants a striking and long-lasting style without permanent changes. They are especially popular during festival season, creative photo shoots, but also for everyday use – when you want a change in your hair without dyeing or heat treatment.
Fiber hair is a vegan and affordable way to build a stunning hairstyle, and DE braids are one of the best ways to easily achieve volume and impact. They can be used by adults and children alike, and are a lighter option than many might imagine – especially when braided carefully and with the right technique.
3. How are DE braids installed?
DE braids are installed so that your own hair and the fiber hair are combined in a small section. The attachment is most often done by braiding or with a small rubber band. The fiber braid, folded in the middle, is lifted over or around your own hair section, and the attachment is done so that both ends are left to “hang” freely.
One DE braid creates two visible “braid sides” – that’s why they’re so effective. For example, 30 DE braids give the appearance of 60 braids.
Braiding usually takes 2-5 hours depending on the amount, thickness of the hair, and whether you want a full head or partial. When done by a professional, braids are very durable and feel lightweight when properly styled.
4. How are DE braids maintained?
DE braids can last 3-8 weeks, sometimes longer, depending on how they are cared for. The general recommendation is to remove them around 6 weeks to prevent your own hair from tangling at the attachment points.
After braiding, you may feel a slight tightness in your scalp for the first 1-2 days – this is normal, but the braids should not feel painful or burning. If this happens, they may be too tight.
The most important thing in maintenance is:
-
Moisturize the scalp and ends with a light serum or treatment spray
-
For the night, you can tie the braids lightly or wear a silk scarf.
-
Do not brush the fiber – work with your fingers or, if necessary, a brush that does not tear the fiber.
If you wear accessories with your braids, remember to remove them at night to avoid unnecessary stress on your hair.
5. How do you wash DE braids?
Washing is easy in the shower. Wash the scalp first – don't wet the entire fiber section unnecessarily unless necessary.
You can use diluted shampoo that you apply directly from the bottle to your scalp. Massage gently and rinse thoroughly. If you need conditioner, apply it lightly to the ends – avoid the roots as it can make the attachment slippery.
Allow the braids to air dry. Avoid using a hair dryer unless you are using cool air – the hot heat can damage the fiber.
If braids are left wet for a long time, they can start to smell musty, so drying them is an important part of maintenance.
6. Can DE braids be reused – and how are they maintained between uses?
Yes, you can – and it’s worth it. High-quality DE braids made from fiber hair can last for many uses when handled gently and kept in good conditions. They can usually be reused 2–3 times , sometimes even more, if they haven’t worn out, tangled, or lost their shape.
When you remove your braids after use, it is a good idea to wash them by soaking them lightly in lukewarm water, to which you can add a little mild shampoo or conditioner. After this, they are rinsed, lightly squeezed with a towel and allowed to air dry or with a cool blow-dryer. Detangle the braids with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb, and avoid brushing them vigorously. When the braids are completely dry, they can be rolled up lightly or stored in a silk bag, which will keep them neat until the next use.
It's also a good idea to give your scalp time to rest between reapplications. The recommended break is about a week - during this time, you should treat your scalp, exfoliate lightly, or moisturize if you feel like it needs a boost.
Once the braids have been maintained and your own scalp has recovered, you can reinstall the same DE braids – and they will look great again. With careful use, fiber hair will serve you for a long time and repeatedly, making it not only a great looking but also a surprisingly durable choice.
